Tustin, CA Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Tustin City Code § 3553 governs garage-sale signage inside Chapter 5, Garage Sales. A sign advertising a proposed garage sale does not need a separate City sign permit, but it must comply with Section 9403d11 of the Tustin City Sign Code, the provision within Article 9's zoning sign rules that specifically addresses garage sale signs. The sign cannot advertise any item, product or service beyond announcing the sale itself, so a sign that promotes a specific piece of furniture or a brand crosses the line.

Timing is tightly bounded: a sign cannot go up more than one day before the sale begins, and it must come down by sunset on the last day the sale runs. A sign that stays up past sunset on the final day, or one that was never allowed to begin with, is treated as an illegal sign subject to the City's abatement authority under Sections 9405g and 9405h of the Tustin City Code, the general enforcement and removal provisions for unlawful signs citywide. Because garage sales themselves are capped at four per year and three consecutive days under Section 3552, sign timing tracks the same short window; a sign that outlives the sale it was advertising is the most common way a garage-sale sign runs afoul of the Code. The City's Community Development Department, which administers the sign code, has authority to act on a report of an overstaying garage-sale sign.
