Westminster, CO Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

Westminster Municipal Code § 11-11-11(B) defines an "Incidental Sign" and, in an explanatory note, expressly lists "garage sale signs" among the customary uses covered, alongside directional signs, real estate signs and political signs. Table 11-11-11-2 confirms that no permit (or sticker) is required for temporary signs across every land use category in the city, and freestanding incidental signs must sit at least 10 feet from the property line, be no taller than 4 to 7 feet depending on zone, and stay at least 10 feet from other freestanding signs.

Section 11-11-11(B)(1) then sets the display period: a temporary sign mounted with standard wire stakes or T-posts, the typical garage sale sign, may be up for "30 days three times during a calendar year," while a more durable temporary sign mounted with metal or wood frames can stay up either 90 consecutive days in one year or 40 consecutive days up to three times a year, each period separated by at least 14 days. " Read together, a resident can post a garage sale sign without a permit as long as it sits back at least 10 feet from the property line and does not exceed the sign code's display-period caps, but the sale itself must wrap up within three days and cannot recur more than once every 90 days regardless of how long the sign stays posted.
