Wicomico County, MD Sign Regulations: Garage Sale Signs (2026)

J treats garage or yard sale signs as a temporary sign permitted without a special exception or sign permit, provided the resident meets three conditions. First, the sign cannot exceed 4 square feet in area, the smallest cap among the temporary-sign categories in this section, well below the 32-square-foot allowance for construction, grand-opening or political signs listed in the same section. Second, only one such sign is allowed per street frontage. Third, timing is tightly bounded: the sign cannot go up more than 5 days before the sale and must be removed within 5 days after the sale ends, a considerably shorter window than the 10-day post-event removal period given to grand-opening banners in Subsection B.

Because the exemption covers only signs meeting all three conditions, a resident who wants a larger sign, more than one per frontage, or a longer display period would need to seek permission through the county's regular sign-permit process administered by the Wicomico County Building Inspector under § 225-127, or risk losing the exemption entirely.
