Wicomico County, MD Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

County Code § 225-134A(2) sets a bright-line weight and count limit on commercial vehicles parked overnight in residential areas. A commercial vehicle may stay overnight in a residential district only if there is no more than one such vehicle per residential lot, it is not parked in a required front setback or in front of the dwelling, and it has a gross vehicle weight under 15,000 pounds. The section then carves out an absolute bar: tractor-trailers, trucks, and any motor vehicle over 15,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, and any vehicle equipped with a refrigeration unit, may not be parked overnight in a residential district under any circumstance, regardless of setback or count.

This sits within the same off-street parking article as the county's RV and boat storage rule (§ 225-134A(1)) and its front-yard parking surface rule (§ 225-134C), all applying to the A-1, V-C and residential districts. The distinction the county draws is functional: a pickup truck or work van under the weight threshold used for daily commuting or a home-based trade is tolerated at one per lot, while heavy trucks, tractor-trailers and reefer units, which generate noise, engine idling and larger footprints, are excluded outright to preserve residential character. The Planning, Zoning and Community Development Department enforces the standard, and questions about whether a specific vehicle's weight rating qualifies go to the Zoning Administrator.
