Wylie's zoning ordinance treats a garage sale as an 'occasional sale,' defined in Appendix B Section 5.2.K.3 as the temporary and occasional retail sale of tangible personal property by someone who is not otherwise in the business of selling merchandise for resale. The seller must be the owner or lessee of the property where the sale is held and is responsible for the goods sold. A person may not sell merchandise bought specifically to resell at the sale, may not run the sale longer than 3 consecutive calendar days, and may not hold more than 4 occasional sales at the same address within any 12-month period.

Signage is tightly limited: only one sign, capped at 2 square feet, may be placed on the lot where the sale is happening. A seller who wants to advertise off-site, such as at a nearby intersection, must place that sign in compliance with the City's separate Sign Ordinance rather than the garage-sale rule; the ordinance does not allow unlimited remote directional signs. Planning and Code Enforcement staff review complaints about oversized or excess signage under this section, and signs that exceed the 2-square-foot cap or duplicate signs on the same lot can be ordered removed.
