Wylie, TX Sign Regulations: Holiday Displays (2026)

Wylie Code of Ordinances § 22-448 lists the signs exempt from the article's permit requirement, provided each still complies with the article's other applicable provisions, and subsection (g) names holiday lights and decorations directly on that exempt list alongside items like flags, government signs and temporary signs. Section 22-458 supplies the operative definition that gives that exemption its limit: holiday lights and decorations means temporary lights and decorations displayed 45 days or less before a federal, state, or locally recognized holiday. Because the exemption is defined by duration rather than by a fixed calendar date, a homeowner or business can put up a display ahead of any holiday the city, state or federal government recognizes, but the display has to come down, or be taken as no longer temporary, once it has been up more than 45 days.

Once a display exceeds that window it is no longer within the § 22-458 definition and instead becomes an ordinary sign subject to the permit requirement in § 22-443 and the general prohibited-sign and illumination limits in §§ 22-447 and 22-451, including the citywide luminance cap of 750 cd/m2 for anything illuminated at night. The exemption sits inside the article adopted by Ordinance No. 2026-25 on June 23, 2026, which replaced the city's former sign article in its entirety.
