Hemet's sign code (Sec. 90-1275) limits campaign signs in residential areas to 6 square feet per face and requires removal within 7 days after the election. In commercial, industrial, and agricultural zones the limit is 32 square feet per face. Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way.
Political and campaign signs in Hemet are regulated under Chapter 90, Article XXXVI (Signs Generally), specifically Sec. 90-1275. In residential areas, no campaign sign may exceed six square feet in total area per face. In agricultural, commercial, and industrial zones, no campaign sign may exceed 32 square feet in area per face, and a campaign sign may be double-faced if placed perpendicular to the right-of-way. All campaign signs must be removed within seven days following the election.
The code also permits temporary freestanding noncommercial signs (Sec. 90-1275(a)(5)): each parcel is allowed two temporary freestanding noncommercial signs at all times, each not exceeding six square feet in area and four feet in height. Signs may not encroach into or be placed within the public right-of-way. Note that under the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert, cities cannot regulate temporary signs based on their political content or message, and California Government Code limits on-premises political sign restrictions, so the durational and content-specific aspects of older sign codes may be unenforceable. Residents should confirm current enforcement practice with the Hemet Planning Division (951-765-2375).
Placing campaign signs in the public right-of-way, exceeding the 6 sq ft residential size limit, or failing to remove signs within seven days after an election can result in sign removal by the city and code enforcement notices.
