Political signs on private property in Corona are protected First Amendment speech and may not be subject to content-based restrictions. Corona Municipal Code Title 17 sign regulations limit size, setback from public right-of-way, and posting on public property, applied content-neutrally.
Corona regulates political signs under the sign provisions of Corona Municipal Code Title 17 (Zoning), in compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015) which prohibits content-based discrimination among temporary signs. Political signs on private residential property are permitted without permit subject to: size limits typically 6 square feet per sign in residential zones and 32 square feet in commercial/industrial zones; placement entirely on the owner's property with no encroachment into the public right-of-way (sidewalk, parkway, street); attachment to lawful structures only (no painting on rocks or attaching to utility poles, traffic signs, or trees in the parkway); and removal within 10 days following the election to which they relate. Posting any signs in the public right-of-way (the strip between sidewalk and curb, on medians, on traffic poles, or on city property) is prohibited and subject to immediate removal by Public Works without notice. Commercial properties allowing campaign signs do so subject to the property's overall sign allowance under their sign program. The 10-day removal rule is enforced via courtesy notice followed by administrative fine if not abated. California Civil Code Β§1940.4 protects tenants' rights to display political signs notwithstanding lease prohibitions, and HOAs are similarly limited under CC Β§4710.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Corona code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
