Passaic, NJ Sign Regulations: Political Signs (2026)

Section 247-1 permits temporary political signs subject to four controls. Yard signs facing a public street cannot exceed eight square feet, and must sit at least eight feet from the inner sidewalk line, or 30 feet from the street line where there is no sidewalk (§ 247-1A). No political sign may be posted or attached to any tree, pole, post, trestle, traffic sign, traffic signal, wall, fence or public building (§ 247-1B). On private buildings, signs are likewise capped at eight square feet, except that each candidate is entitled to one sign, of any size, on the one private building designated as that candidate's campaign headquarters (§ 247-1C).

Timing is fixed by § 247-1D: signs for any national, state or local election may go up no sooner than 30 days before the election and must come down within eight days after it. Article I of Chapter 247, which contains § 247-1, dates to the City's original 1975 code (Ord. No. 297-75) and predates the later articles on abandoned-business signs (Article II, 1979) and general temporary signs (Article III, 1995), so its 30-day/eight-day election window and eight-square-foot caps are specific to political signs and are not overridden by the general temporary-sign rules in Article III.
