Political signs are treated the same as other temporary signs under South Jordan's content-neutral code. Utah Code 57-8a-219 further guarantees HOA residents the right to post political signs from 45 days before through 7 days after an election.
After Reed v. Town of Gilbert (2015), cities cannot create special categories for 'political signs' that give them different (typically more permissive) treatment than other temporary or ideological signs. South Jordan therefore regulates political signs alongside other temporary residential signs with uniform size limits (typically 4-6 sq ft in residential zones, larger allowances on commercial property), placement on private property, and no permit requirement. While the city cannot treat political signs specially, state law does: Utah Code 57-8a-219 (Community Association Act) and 57-8-8.4 (Condominium Act) guarantee that HOA rules cannot prohibit the display of political signs during the period beginning 45 days before an election and ending 7 days after. HOAs may impose reasonable time, place, and manner rules but may not prohibit outright. The federal Fair Housing Act generally does not apply to yard-sign content. Signs supporting or opposing ballot initiatives, candidates, and referenda all receive the same treatment. Signs may not be posted on public right-of-way, utility poles, or traffic signals (Utah Code 72-7-104 prohibits signs in state highway right-of-way). During election season, the Salt Lake County Clerk and Utah Lieutenant Governor's office provide additional guidance on electioneering near polling locations (prohibited within 150 feet).
