Sunrise regulates political and campaign signs as content-neutral "noncommercial signs." On residential property you may post up to 8 sq. ft., plus an extra 8 sq. ft. during the 90 days before any election. No permit is required, and signs may stay up 90 days.
Sunrise's sign code (Land Development Code ch. 16, Sec. 16-253, Table 3) regulates political signs as "noncommercial signs," applying the same size and time limits regardless of message — the content-neutral approach required by Reed v. Town of Gilbert. In residential districts a noncommercial sign may not exceed 8 sq. ft., with an additional 8 sq. ft. allowed during the 90 calendar days before any municipal, county, state, or federal election. Nonresidential limits are 32 sq. ft. plus 16 sq. ft. in the election window. Signs may be displayed up to 90 days, must show the posting date, stay under 6 ft. tall in residential areas, and sit at least 10 ft. from the right-of-way. Temporary signs need no permit.
Signs in the public right-of-way, on medians, or attached to poles or trees are prohibited under Sec. 16-248 and are removed by Community Enhancement & Code Compliance. Signs left past 90 days become a public nuisance abated under Chapter 9.
