Political campaign signs and other temporary signs are regulated by WSMC §17.31 (Temporary Signage). The First Amendment limits the City's ability to regulate content but allows neutral time-place-manner restrictions.
Temporary political signs may be placed in residential yards subject to size limits (typically 6 sq ft per sign) and removal within 10 days after the election. Signs may not be placed in the public right-of-way, on utility poles, or attached to traffic-control devices. Garage-sale signs, open-house signs, and real-estate signs are subject to similar time-place-manner rules.
Signs in the right-of-way are removed by Public Works without notice; residential yard signs typically receive a courtesy notice before removal.
