West Sacramento, CA Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Chapter 10.24 of the West Sacramento Municipal Code governs stopping, standing and parking on city streets. The baseline rule in § 10.24.030 requires every vehicle to be parked parallel with the edge of the roadway, headed in the direction of traffic, with the right-hand wheels within eighteen inches of the curbline or edge of the roadway. Two exceptions exist. On streets that the city traffic administrator has marked or signed for angle parking, vehicles park at the angle shown by the marks and signs. On streets where parking on the left side of the roadway is specifically permitted by signing or marking, left-side parking is lawful. Under § 10.24.080, where a street has two or more separate one-way roadways, such as a divided multi-lane street, nobody may stand or park on the left-hand side of that one-way roadway.

Section 10.24.050 is the catch-all: no person may park, stop or stand a vehicle in a position that obstructs the normal movement of traffic or prohibits the free use of the street. Section 10.24.240 bars stopping, standing or parking within any parkway, whether the vehicle is attended or unattended. Related sections in the same chapter add more limits: a vehicle left unattended on a grade exceeding three percent in a business or residence district must have its wheels blocked by turning them against the curb or by other means (§ 10.24.090), no one may park on a roadway for the principal purpose of maintaining, dismantling or repairing the vehicle except for emergency repairs (§ 10.24.070), red curbs allow no stopping or parking (§ 10.24.130), and a vehicle in a marked space must be entirely within the white lines, though oversize vehicles and vehicles with trailers may occupy two spaces (§ 10.24.120). In an alley, stopping is limited to active loading or unloading and never so as to block the ingress and egress to any abutting property (§ 10.24.170).

The parking manager can also change the rules on short notice. Temporary no-parking signs for events, emergencies or public works must be in place twenty-four hours in advance of the effective time under § 10.24.100(B), and posted time limits under § 10.24.110 bind drivers on the days and hours shown. Section 10.24.010 makes clear that a time limit never excuses a driver from stricter Vehicle Code or city rules.
