Greenwood, IN Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

UDO Sec. 10-03-08.D.11 lets commercial property owners post window signs without a sign permit as long as each sign covers less than ten percent (10%) of a window, capped at a maximum of two signs per window. Once a window sign or combination of signs exceeds that 10% threshold, the property must obtain a wall sign permit from the Department of Community Development Services before the display goes up. The permitted 'Window Sign' category in the sign menu (UDO Sec. 10-03-08.L) then sets the outer dimensional ceiling by zoning district: in the Old Town (OT) and Community Shopping (CS) districts, up to thirty percent (30%) of the total window area of a single business may be covered by signage, while in the Community Mixed-Use (CM), Community Light (CL) and Industrial Commercial (IC) districts a single storefront may cover up to forty percent (40%) of its total window area.

The menu allows one window sign per storefront in the OT, CS, CM, CL and IC districts. Any signs, posters, symbols or other identification directly attached to a window, or erected inside a building and visible from a public right-of-way or adjacent property, count as window signs for these limits. Because window signs are calculated against interior building signage rules rather than the building- and ground-mounted sign allowance in UDO Sec. 10-03-08.L.1, a business can add a compliant window display without losing its one building-mounted and one ground-mounted sign entitlement.

Applications and fee payment go through Community Development Services under the Official Fee Schedule, and a denial can be appealed to the Board of Zoning Appeals under Indiana law per Sec. 10-03-08.J.
