Irvington, NJ Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Township Code § 460-17, part of the property maintenance chapter, targets temporary signs and paper advertising glued or otherwise attached to storefront glass. Subsection A requires that any temporary sign or other paper advertising material exposed to public view come down at the expiration of the event or sale it promotes, or within 60 days of being put up, whichever happens first; "for rent" signs are carved out of that deadline entirely. Subsection B caps coverage: outside of active repairs or alterations, no more than 33 1/3% of the square footage of any single window or window display area may be devoted to signs or other temporary advertising material.

The rule sits alongside § 460-15 on window cleanliness and § 460-16 on storefront and security-gate maintenance, so an Irvington storefront is regulated on glass condition, screening of stored merchandise, and now signage coverage all at once. Enforcement runs through the Department of Housing Services under the general property maintenance scheme in Chapter 460, and the same chapter's Article VII vacant-property rules can compound if a storefront covered in old sale posters also reads as showing evidence of vacancy.
