Madera, CA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

04(S) exempts temporary window signs from the standard sign permit requirement, covering non-internally illuminated signs announcing special sales, a change in management, individual product or price information, or similar messages designed to be viewed from adjacent streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way or parking areas. The exemption runs for a period not exceeding 30 days, and the provision is explicit that it is not intended to allow additional permanent signs beyond that window. Coverage is capped two ways: signs painted on or temporarily affixed to a window may cover no more than 60% of any single window or series of windows, and no more than 30% of the entire surface area of all available windows at the location combined.

Placement is also restricted so the signs cannot be affixed in a way that blocks a clear view of exits or entrances or creates a safety hazard for people exiting or entering the building. The total area of a business's window signs, even within these coverage caps, cannot exceed the permanent on-building sign area otherwise allowed for that business or use. 03(A).
