Oneida, NY Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

City of Oneida Code § 190-15C(17) sets a three-tier coverage standard for window signs that applies citywide regardless of zoning district, distinct from the district-specific size caps in § 190-15D that govern freestanding and wall signs. Permanent window signs, such as a painted or vinyl business name applied directly to the glass, are capped at 15% of the area of the window in which they are displayed. Temporary or display signs placed in a window, such as sale posters or seasonal promotions, get a larger allowance of up to 25% of the window area.

Critically, the two allowances are not simply additive up to 40%; the section states that in no case shall the total sign area, permanent and temporary combined, exceed 40% of the window area, so a business already using its full 15% permanent allowance can only add temporary signage up to the remaining 25% before hitting the 40% ceiling. The standard is measured window by window rather than storefront-wide, and it sits within the same general-requirements subsection that covers freestanding signs, roof signs, wall signs, and digital signs, all enforced through the same sign permit and certificate of compliance process administered by the Building Inspector/Code Enforcement Officer under § 190-15G.
