Plymouth, MN Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

06 sets Plymouth's window sign rule the same way across every non-residential zoning district: for non-residential uses in residential districts (Subd. 2(c)(3)), the Office District (Subd. 3(c)(3)), the C-2 through C-5 and B-C commercial districts (Subd. 4(b)(3)), and the Public-Institutional District (Subd. 7(c)), window signage is permitted only on walls that have, or are entitled to have, wall signage, and it must be deducted from that wall's allowable sign area rather than treated as a bonus. This means a business that maxes out its wall sign allowance under Subd.

2(c)(2) (50 square feet or five percent of the wall area, whichever is greater, for non-residential uses in residential districts) has to shrink either its wall sign or its window graphics to stay within that combined total. Separately, no matter how much wall allowance remains, window signage is hard-capped at 50 percent of the glazed window area on that specific wall; a storefront cannot wrap every pane in graphics even if it has unused wall sign square footage. 07, Subd. 2(k) exempts window signage from the permit requirement altogether, provided it complies with all window signage regulations including the deduction rule.

Businesses adding window graphics should measure both the glazed area on the wall and their remaining wall sign allowance before installing, since exceeding either threshold triggers a violation even without a permit on file.
