Troup County, GA Sign Regulations: Window Signs (2026)

Section 10.5 of the County's sign ordinance lists the categories of signage that do not require a permit, provided each still meets the article's other regulations. Window signs fall under item (ii): they are permitted only in the UR-VL (urban village), LC (limited commercial), HC (highway commercial), LI (light industrial) and HI (heavy industrial) zoning districts, and the sign area on the glass cannot exceed 50 percent of the total window area of the storefront. A separate exemption in the same section, item (i), covers ordinary window displays of goods for sale, which are not treated as signs at all and carry no coverage cap.

Because window signs sit in the permit-exempt list, a business does not file an application or pay a permit fee with the Community Development Department to install one, but it must still comply with the article's general standards in Section 10.6, including the ban on signs that flash, move or change intensity more than once daily unless they qualify as an approved changing sign, and the requirement that all sign copy be maintained in good repair with no missing or burned-out elements. A window sign that covers more than half the glass, or that appears in a zoning district outside the five listed, is treated as a sign requiring a permit and is subject to the size, height and design standards that apply in that district.
