Toms River, NJ Solar Energy: Panel Permits (2026)

Toms River Township regulates solar photovoltaic installations as part of the Electrical Subcode fee schedule in Chapter 252, Construction Codes, Uniform, rather than through a stand-alone solar ordinance. Section 252-6C(2)(q) sets the permit fee for solar devices based on the designated kilowatt rating of the photovoltaic system: systems rated from one to 50 kilowatts pay $150, systems from 51 to 100 kilowatts pay $300, and systems over 100 kilowatts pay an additional $300 for each additional 100 kilowatts. The same fee schedule reaches the equipment that pairs with rooftop or ground-mounted solar arrays.

Under § 252-6C(2)(r), inverter fees other than microinverters run $25 for one to 10 kilowatts, $65 for 11 to 45 kilowatts, and an added $25 for every additional 10 kilowatts above 45; § 252-6C(2)(s) sets a flat $75 fee for microinverters, defined as inverters rated under one kilowatt, regardless of how many are installed. Disconnects and combiner panels are billed separately under § 252-6C(2)(t) by amperage, from $75 for up to 100 amperes to $650 for 601 to 1,000 amperes, with $75 added for each additional 100 amperes above that.

All of this work is administered by the township's Office of Construction Permits and Inspections, established under § 252-2, and the minimum Electrical Subcode fee for any permit, solar included, is $65 under § 252-6C(6).
