Gilroy, CA Soliciting & Door-to-Door: No-Knock Registry (2026)

Gilroy City Code Section 16A.11 lists the conduct rules that apply to every licensee or identity-permit holder covered by Chapter 16A, on top of the permit itself. Two of those rules function as the city's no-knock protections for residents. First, subsection (4) confines door-to-door work to daylight: no licensee, agent, servant or employee may solicit, peddle or vend goods, wares, merchandise or services from door to door except between 9:00 a.m. and sunset, so evening and pre-dawn knocking is barred outright regardless of the solicitor's permit status.

Second, subsection (5) lets a resident opt out entirely. Where a building, structure or place of business has a sign reading "No Peddlers," "No Solicitation," or words of similar import painted or affixed so it is visible to the public, it is unlawful for any person to solicit, peddle or sell there by ringing the doorbell, knocking, or otherwise calling attention to their presence, regardless of the hour. The sign requirement is self-enforcing: a resident does not need to register with the city or the police department for the sign to carry legal force, unlike the more elaborate no-solicitation registries some cities maintain. Chapter 16A also separately requires solicitors to identify themselves and sign their name for comparison against their identity permit if asked by a police officer or city official, which gives an officer responding to a no-knock complaint a way to confirm who was at the door (Section 16A.11(2)).
