West Bloomfield, MI Soliciting & Door-to-Door: Solicitor Permits (2026)

Under West Bloomfield Township Code § 17-3, it is unlawful to engage in commercial solicitation, peddling or vending without a permit issued by the township clerk, and a business sending multiple canvassers must file a separate application for every agent or employee. The application (§ 17-4) requires the applicant's legal name and aliases used in the past five years, a driver's license or birth certificate with photo ID, a photograph taken at the clerk's office, two property-owner references, requested canvassing dates capped at ninety days per year, and a signed release letting the West Bloomfield Police Department run an ICHAT criminal history check.

Applicants post a cash bond with the township treasurer and pay a permit fee set by Township Board resolution (§ 17-5); the police department investigates the vehicle used and the applicant's record before the clerk issues a photo identification-card permit (§§ 17-6, 17-7). Under § 17-9 every permit expires ninety days after issuance regardless of the requested dates, and § 17-8 makes permits nontransferable. The clerk can deny, suspend for thirty days, or revoke a permit for a violation, but the permittee may request a Township Board appeal hearing within twenty days under § 17-10.

Exempt from the permit itself, though not the operating rules in Division 2, are nonprofit and political canvassers, licensed veteran peddlers under MCL 35.441, and out-of-state sellers not subject to Michigan sales or use tax registration (§ 17-2).
