Colonie, NY Special Events & Permits: Block Party Permits (2026)

Chapter 48 of the Colonie Town Code, adopted to control alcohol use in public places, folds block parties into its definition of "special event," alongside fairs and picnics, at any public place in Town. Ordinarily, § 48-3 bars anyone from consuming alcohol in or on a public place, but § 48-4B lifts that ban for any block party, fair, picnic, or other community special event for which the Town Clerk has issued a special permit. To get that permit, § 48-5A requires anyone 21 or older to apply to the Town Clerk at least five business days before the event, on their own behalf or for an organization.

The application must give the applicant's or organization's name, address, and phone number; the event's purpose, date, approximate start and end times, expected attendance, and assembly-area location; plus anything else the Clerk reasonably needs. Section 48-5C sets no fee for the application. The Clerk issues the permit under § 48-5D once satisfied the event fits the neighborhood and won't endanger public health, morals, safety, or welfare, and § 48-5F lets the Clerk waive requirements where strict compliance would cause unreasonable hardship without endangering the neighborhood. A denial can be appealed in writing to the Town Supervisor or designee under § 48-5E.
