Brookhaven, NY Special Events & Permits: Parade Permits (2026)

Article III of Chapter 4 (Amusements) governs parades separately from the Town's general amusement-permit article. Section 4-11 bars anyone from organizing, conducting, or taking part in a parade on a Town highway, public street, or other public place without a Town Clerk permit, and it also prohibits discharging firearms or fireworks or making other unreasonable noise during a funeral or similar procession. Section 4-12 requires the application to be in writing, state the parade's purpose, be signed by the applicant or an officer of the sponsoring organization, and reach the Town Clerk at least 30 days before the parade date.

Under § 4-13, a permitted parade may travel only the highways and streets the Town Clerk specifies in the permit, and the Clerk can revoke the permit on the recommendation of the Town's Highway Department, its Division of Fire Prevention, its Division of Traffic Safety, or the Suffolk County Police Department. The chapter's definitions section, § 4-2, describes a parade as an organized procession on the public right-of-way that closes the roadway to regular traffic, which is why routine group walks or bike rides are handled instead under the separate outdoor-assemblage rules in Article IV.

Because Article III sits inside the same chapter as the Town's general amusement and outdoor-assemblage permits, an event that mixes a march with vendor booths or a stage may need permits under more than one article, and applicants should check with the Town Clerk's office before filing a single application.
