Oak Park, IL Special Events & Permits: Sidewalk Dining & Cafés (2026)

Oak Park Village Code Section 22-10-2 lets the Village Manager issue permits for restaurant tables and floral displays on public sidewalks. Table use must be incidental to a restaurant on contiguous property, though tables can extend onto the noncontiguous street side of the sidewalk if eight conditions are met: no parking on the adjacent street side, traffic under 10,000 vehicles per day, tables kept at least two feet from the curb, dining patio fencing installed, bollards placed at either end and along the street edge, extension beyond the restaurant frontage only with the affected neighbor's non-objection, all other permit requirements met, and no cabling over the public way during nonoperational hours.

A permit cannot issue if the use would unreasonably interfere with pedestrian or vehicular traffic, and all food service must follow applicable sanitation regulations. Subsection C requires that seating never reduce the clear, ADA-compliant portion of the sidewalk below five feet, maintained as a straight, continuous pathway wherever possible. Permit holders must furnish and maintain insurance under Section 22-10-5, keep the sidewalk area clean and safe, remove debris daily, and keep tables clear of fire hydrant ports. The annual fee is fifty dollars plus fifty cents per square foot of sidewalk space used, and the Village Manager may revoke the permit on thirty days' notice with a pro rata refund.

This scheme was adopted by Ordinance 15-074 on March 16, 2015, alongside the companion canopy-support permit in Section 22-10-3 and the outdoor furniture program in Section 22-10-4.
