Above-ground swimming pools in unincorporated Cook County exceeding 24 inches in depth at any point or with a surface area exceeding 250 square feet require a building permit. A private residential above-ground pool is defined as a rigid or semi-rigid structure whose framework is installed primarily above ground elevation, intended for swimming, wading, or bathing exclusively by the homeowner, occupants, family, and guests. Cook County Health Department (CCDPH) approval is required prior to applying with Building and Zoning. All electrical work must comply with the 2014 Cook County Electrical Code Article 680 (Swimming Pools, Fountains, and Similar Installations). All electrical conductors and devices must be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Barrier requirements apply to above-ground pools meeting the depth/size thresholds.
