Cook County requires building permits for all residential swimming pools in unincorporated areas. A private residential in-ground swimming pool is defined as a manmade basin with a depth exceeding 18 inches, constructed of concrete, steel, or approved materials. A private residential above-ground pool is a rigid or semi-rigid structure exceeding 24 inches in depth or 250 square feet in surface area. Pool permits require Cook County Health Department (CCDPH) approval prior to applying with Building and Zoning. Electrical work must comply with the 2014 Cook County Electrical Code (Article 680 - Swimming Pools, Fountains, and Similar Installations). All electrical conductors and devices must be protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). Online permit applications are available through the ePermit system.
