Anchorage follows IRC Appendix G pool barrier standards: minimum 48 inch barrier, self-closing and self-latching gates, and specific opening limits. Applies to pools and spas with water depth of 24 inches or more.
Under the International Residential Code Appendix G, adopted through Anchorage Municipal Code Title 23, any pool or spa with water depth of 24 inches or more must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high measured from the exterior side. Vertical members may not have spacing greater than 4 inches, and horizontal members closer together than 45 inches apart must be on the pool side. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above grade. Where the dwelling forms part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool area must have alarms or self-closing, self-latching hardware, or the pool itself must have an approved safety cover. Above-ground pools with non-climbable walls at least 48 inches high may serve as the barrier if ladders are secured or removable.
