Coral Gables requires all residential swimming pools to have approved safety barriers meeting both Florida Building Code Section 424.2.17 and Zoning Code Section 5-108. Barriers must be at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates. Pools cannot be filled until barriers are permitted, installed, inspected, and approved.
Per Zoning Code Section 5-108(E) and (F) and Florida Building Code Section 424.2.17, all residential pools require safety barriers at least 48 inches tall measured from the outside ground level. Barriers may not have gaps, openings, or structural components allowing a child to crawl under, squeeze through, or climb over. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and equipped with self-latching locks with release mechanisms on the pool side out of children's reach. Gates must have spring-lock mechanisms that remain closed and fastened at all times and be equipped with safe locks when the pool is not in use. If any neighboring fence or wall used as part of the pool barrier is altered or removed, the property owner must immediately permit and erect replacement barriers. Barrier materials must comply with Board of Architects standards.
Non-compliant pool barriers result in Code Enforcement citations and orders to drain the pool until barriers are approved. Fines up to $500 for repeat violations. Contact Development Services at (305) 460-5235 or Code Enforcement at (305) 460-5216.
