A Davis pool or spa must be isolated by an enclosure meeting California Health and Safety Code Section 115923: at least 60 inches high, no more than a 2-inch gap at grade, no opening passing a 4-inch sphere, and gates that self-close, self-latch, and open away from the pool.
The Davis Swimming Pool and Spa Checklist implements the California Swimming Pool Safety Act and the Davis Municipal Code. A pool or spa on a single-family lot must be isolated by an enclosure meeting Cal. Health and Safety Code Section 115923: minimum height of 60 inches; maximum ground clearance of two inches at the bottom; no opening passing a four-inch sphere; and no handholds a child under five could climb. Access gates must open away from the pool and self-close with a self-latching device no lower than 60 inches above the ground (max opening 4 inches to paving, 2 inches to dirt). The pool must be set back at least 5 feet from property lines and easements.
A non-compliant barrier fails inspection, and required devices must be in place before the pool is filled. Removing or disabling the barrier afterward is a code violation enforced by the city.
