Kent requires pool barriers at least 48 inches high with self-closing and self-latching gates under IRC Appendix G. Barriers are mandatory for pools deeper than 24 inches.
Kent enforces IRC Appendix G pool barrier requirements as adopted in the Washington State Building Code. Pools and spas deeper than 24 inches must be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches high. Barriers must have no openings larger than 4 inches, no footholds or handholds, and solid or vertical members spaced so a 4 inch sphere cannot pass. Gates must be self-closing, self-latching, and open outward away from the pool. Latch release mechanisms must be at least 54 inches above the ground. Where the house forms part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool must have audible alarms or a power safety cover. Above-ground pools with removable ladders must still be fully fenced if adjacent to residential access.
Missing or noncompliant barriers are life-safety violations. Fines can reach $500 per day until corrected, plus liability exposure in the event of injury.
