Redmond pools and spas over 24 inches deep need a 48-inch barrier with self-closing, self-latching gates opening outward. No gap larger than 4 inches. Follows IRC Appendix G adopted by Washington.
Redmond follows the International Residential Code (IRC) Appendix G pool barrier standards as adopted through the Washington State Building Code. Any pool, spa, or hot tub with water greater than 24 inches deep must be fully enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high measured on the outside of the barrier. Horizontal members on the outside face must be at least 45 inches apart to prevent climbing, or the barrier must be designed so climbing is not possible. Gaps in vertical fence pickets must not exceed 1.75 inches. The barrier must not have openings, handholds, or footholds that allow a 4-inch diameter sphere to pass through. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching, must open outward away from the pool, and latches must be at least 54 inches above the ground unless the latch is on the pool-side with a specific shielded design. Where the house forms part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool must have alarms or a power safety cover. Solid mesh barriers are allowed if they meet the same dimensional requirements. Hot tubs with locking safety covers meeting ASTM F1346 can substitute the cover for the barrier when the cover is closed.
Non-compliant barrier: building code violation enforceable under RMC 15.04, with civil penalties up to $500 per day. May also create civil tort liability to owners.
