Livonia requires a 48-inch minimum barrier around any pool deeper than 24 inches with self-closing, self-latching gates under Michigan Residential Code Appendix G.
Pool barriers in Livonia must be at least 48 inches tall measured on the outside of the barrier, with no openings that allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Fences with horizontal members less than 45 inches apart must have vertical pickets spaced no more than 1.75 inches, while wider-spaced horizontals require the tighter 4-inch rule above. Gates must open outward, be self-closing and self-latching, with latches at least 54 inches above grade, and be locked when the pool is unattended. If a wall of the dwelling forms part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool must have an alarm that sounds for at least 30 seconds or a power safety cover must be provided. Chain-link mesh openings cannot exceed 1.75 inches. Final barrier inspection is required before filling the pool with water.
