South Jordan requires residential pools to be surrounded by a barrier at least 48 inches tall with self-closing, self-latching gates, per Utah-adopted International Residential Code.
South Jordan enforces swimming pool barrier requirements through its adoption of the International Residential Code (Appendix G) and Utah state building code amendments. Any pool or spa capable of holding water more than 24 inches deep must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches tall, measured from the outside. Vertical fence members must be spaced no more than 4 inches apart, with no handholds or footholds that would aid climbing. Gates must open outward away from the pool, be self-closing, and be self-latching with the release mechanism located at least 54 inches above the ground. Where the dwelling forms part of the barrier, doors leading to the pool area must have alarms or the pool must have a powered safety cover. Failure to maintain the barrier can result in code enforcement and liability for attractive nuisance claims.
