Sunrise pool barriers must be at least 4 feet high on single-family lots and 6 feet on other residential and nonresidential property, per LDC Sec. 16-111(a)(2). The barrier can be a screened patio, fence, or wall around the pool or the property.
Under Land Development Code Sec. 16-111, every Sunrise pool needs a safety barrier that completely surrounds the pool or the property perimeter and meets the Florida Building Code residential safety barrier standard. Since January 25, 2011, the minimum height is 4 feet on single-family lots, measured on the side facing away from the pool, and 6 feet on other residential and nonresidential lots. Waterfront lots may skip the rear-line barrier where compliant side barriers extend to the waterline. This tracks Florida's Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Fla. Stat. Ch. 515), which sets a statewide 4-foot barrier floor. During construction, an unfilled pool must be ringed by a temporary fence at least 6 feet high.
A non-compliant or missing barrier draws a correction order and fines, and the pool cannot pass inspection. Owners face serious drowning liability, and pool safety compliance must be disclosed when the home is sold.
