Indio, CA Swimming Pools & Spas: Pool Permits (2026)

Under the City of Indio Building & Safety Division, any structure that is erected, constructed, enlarged, altered, repaired, moved, or converted requires a building permit before work begins, and a swimming pool or spa falls within that requirement. Indio adopts the California Building Code (including the California Residential Code) through its municipal code, so the pool barrier, structural, electrical, and plumbing standards a contractor must meet come from those state-adopted codes rather than a unique city engineering standard. Beyond the building permit, Indio's zoning standards (Chapter 3.02 of the Unified Development Code, General Site Development Standards for All Zones) control where a pool may be placed: the outside wall of the water-containing portion of a pool or spa must be at least 10 feet from a street-side property line, at least 5 feet from interior side and rear property lines, and at least 5 feet from the exterior wall of any dwelling. Pool equipment (filter, heater, maintenance systems) cannot sit within a required street-adjacent setback, within 3 feet of an interior side or rear line, or within 10 feet of a neighbor's living area unless inside a soundproof enclosure. The Building & Safety Division advises applicants to confirm requirements before starting work, as some minor projects are exempt.
