DeSoto regulates placement of trash and recycling carts to support efficient collection and preserve neighborhood aesthetics. On collection days, carts must be placed at the curb with the handle/hinge side facing the house and wheels toward the street, positioned in the gutter or just behind the curb, not in the street, not blocking sidewalks, and not under low-hanging tree branches that interfere with the automated-arm truck. Carts should be at least 3 feet apart from each other and from obstacles (mailboxes, parked cars, utility poles) to allow the truck arm to grip them. Carts may be placed at the curb no earlier than 6:00 PM the evening before collection and must be returned to a storage location behind the front building line within 12-24 hours after pickup. Leaving carts at the curb year-round or placing them in the street creates violations under property maintenance rules and can be cited by Code Compliance. Damaged or missing carts should be reported to Waste Management.
Specific penalty amounts for this ordinance are not published in a publicly accessible fine schedule. Contact Desoto code enforcement directly for current fines, enforcement procedures, and hearing options.
