Trash, recycling, and green waste carts must be stored out of public view when not set out for collection. On collection day, carts go curbside by 6:00 AM with handles facing the house, lids closed, and spaced at least 3 feet apart. Carts must be retrieved by 8:00 PM.
Mission Viejo Municipal Code requires waste carts to be stored out of public view at all times except on collection day. Acceptable storage locations include side yards, garages, or behind fences. On collection day, place carts at the curb with handles facing the house, lids fully closed, and at least 3 feet of clearance between carts and from obstacles (mailboxes, cars, fire hydrants). Do not block sidewalks, driveways, or streets. Carts should not be placed under low-hanging branches or power lines. Overfilled carts with lids that cannot close may not be serviced. In HOA communities (which cover most Mission Viejo neighborhoods), CC&Rs may impose additional storage requirements. Many HOAs require carts to be stored in the garage or behind enclosed side-yard gates. Contact Ware Disposal at (949) 642-1191 for missed pickups or Code Enforcement at (949) 470-3054 for storage violations.
Carts left at the curb past 8:00 PM on collection day or stored in public view on non-collection days are code violations. First offenses typically receive a warning letter. Repeated violations result in administrative citations starting at $100. HOA communities may impose separate fines for visible cart storage.
