Section 66-67 of the Mosinee Code of Ordinances specifies what counts as an approved residential solid waste container: metal or plastic cans with tightfitting covers and suitable handles, commonly called garbage cans, or plastic garbage bags closed with a tie. Containers are capped at a maximum 35-gallon size, and a filled container cannot exceed the weight one person can safely lift, set in the code at 50 pounds. Metal cans must resist denting during normal handling, and plastic cans must withstand freezing and hot weather without melting or cracking.

Residents may also set out small cardboard boxes of rubbish up to nine cubic feet, plus tied bundles of newspapers and magazines up to ten inches high, though wet or soaked bundles and boxes will be skipped until the next collection day and cardboard boxes are not returned to the curb. the evening before the scheduled pickup, and must be pulled back from the curbside collection point within 24 hours of the regular collection time.
