Trash, recycling, and compost carts must be placed at the curb by 6:00 AM on collection day, spaced three feet apart, and returned to a screened area out of public view within 24 hours.
Palo Altos curbside collection is fully automated, so proper cart placement is required for service. Under the municipal code and GreenWaste service standards, carts must be at the curb with wheels against the curb, handles facing the home, and at least three feet of clearance on all sides away from mailboxes, parked cars, utility poles, and other carts so the collection truck arm can grip and tip each cart. Carts should not block sidewalks, crosswalks, fire hydrants, or driveways. Between collection days, carts must be stored behind a fence, in a side yard, garage, or other location that is not in front of the house or visible from the public street, per the citys zoning and property maintenance standards. Apartment buildings use shared enclosures that must remain closed and may not overflow. Violations can result in a warning followed by administrative citation.
