Carts must sit at the curb with handles facing the house, 3 feet clear on all sides, and away from parked cars, mailboxes, and fire hydrants so Recology's automated trucks can service them.
Automated side-loader trucks used by Recology require proper cart placement to function. Mountain View residents must place each cart at the curb with the wheels and handle facing the home and the lid opening toward the street. Carts need a minimum of 3 feet of clearance on all sides and cannot be placed under low-hanging branches, behind parked vehicles, or within 5 feet of mailboxes, utility poles, or fire hydrants. Do not stack bags or boxes on top of the cart because the lid must close fully. On narrow streets, Recology may ask residents to place carts on a specific side. Blocking sidewalks violates ADA accessibility requirements and City code; carts should sit in the gutter or at the very edge of the driveway apron.
