Trash, recycling, and organics carts must be placed curbside with wheels against the curb, spaced 3 feet apart, and kept out of sight from the public right-of-way on non-collection days.
Santa Clara Municipal Code requires waste carts to be placed at the curb with handles facing the house and wheels against the curb. Carts must be spaced at least 3 feet apart from each other and from obstructions like mailboxes, parked cars, and utility poles to allow automated truck arms to operate safely. Carts may be placed at the curb no earlier than 5:00 PM the evening before collection and must be removed by the end of the collection day. On non-collection days, carts must be stored out of public view, typically in a side yard, garage, or behind a screening fence. Carts must not block sidewalks, bike lanes, or driveways. Property owners are responsible for cart storage and can be cited for visible or blocking carts. Replacement carts for damaged containers are provided at no charge by Mission Trail.
