Providence County cities require barrels placed curbside with lids closed, at least 3 feet apart, clear of parked cars, hydrants, and mailboxes. Barrels must be retrieved within 24 hours and stored out of public view between collections.
Providence Code Β§20-3 and similar Cranston, Pawtucket, East Providence, and Woonsocket ordinances require trash and recycling barrels placed curbside or at alley edge on the scheduled collection day with lids fully closed to prevent litter and vermin. Barrels should be spaced at least 3 feet apart, clear of hydrants (15 ft), parked cars, mailboxes, and utility poles so the automated collection arm can reach them. After collection, barrels must be removed from the curb within 12 to 24 hours (Providence Β§20-3; Cranston Β§10.40). Between pickups, RI Minimum Housing Standards require barrels stored out of public view (side or rear of dwelling). Overflowing or uncovered barrels are rejected.
Barrels left out past deadline: Providence warning then $25 to $100 per occurrence. Improperly placed or overflowing barrels skipped by hauler. Repeat violations: escalating fines up to $300.
