Amherst, NY Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Under Town Code § 169-6(D), "Move Out, Clean Up and Bulk Garbage Disposal," residents and property owners may place only eight items in addition to their garbage totes at the curb for pickup. Anyone with more than eight items, or who sets items out before 12:00 noon the day before the scheduled collection, is assessed a $250 move-out fee by official citation payable to the Town. Beyond the eight-item cap, § 169-5 governs how bulk material must be prepared: brush and tree parts from work the resident performed may go out with yard waste only if tied in bundles no longer than four feet, no more than 24 inches in diameter and weighing no more than 60 pounds, with small amounts allowed loose in solid-bottom containers.

Reasonable amounts of construction and demolition debris generated by the owner or occupant may be set out in containers or bundles up to 60 pounds. Major appliances and large household furnishings may go out on the regular collection day, but refrigerators and freezers must have their door latching or locking mechanism removed before being placed at the curb. No bundle or filled container of any kind may exceed 48 inches in length, 40 gallons in volume or 60 pounds in weight. All collection happens outside the Village of Williamsville, which runs its own waste program; Amherst's Refuse Control Office sets the collection calendar and enforces these limits.
