Amherst, NY Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

Section 169-6, last amended in 2017, directs the Town of Amherst Refuse Control Office to designate the days and times for removing all waste from the public roads, streets, highways and alleys of the Town, outside the corporate limits of the Village of Williamsville. It is lawful to place prepared waste at the curb only on the designated collection day for that address, and only if the premises is subject to a garbage district fee, making collection a paid, mandatory municipal service rather than a service residents can decline.

Section 169-4 places the whole program, including the collection calendar, under the supervision of the Office of Refuse Control, which writes implementing rules subject to Town Board approval known as the Town of Amherst Waste Management Law. Section 169-21 gives the Refuse Control Office authority to print and distribute notice to every premises in the garbage and refuse district of its collection dates and times and of any additional rules, and to designate other Town employees to help enforce the collection schedule. Section 169-6F further bars anyone from placing in the public right-of-way waste generated outside the Town of Amherst or generated on a lot that does not abut the right-of-way where it is set out, protecting the schedule from being used for out-of-district dumping.
