Section 6.04.060 lets residents place large items, other than appliances, at the curb on their regular collection day for an additional cost set in § 6.04.090, but because these pickups require route planning, the resident must contact the sanitation division during operating hours Monday through Thursday at least one business day before the scheduled collection day. The department of public works, with board of public works approval, publishes an annual list of exactly which items count as 'large items' for this program. Appliances, defined in § 6.04.010 as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers and similar items (excluding construction materials, tires, automobile parts and electronics such as televisions and computers, which are not collected at all), are handled on a separate track: they are picked up weekly only on Fridays, and residents must call the sanitation division by 12:00 noon on the preceding Thursday, then set the appliance at the curb no more than 24 hours before that Friday collection (§ 6.04.070(a)). Any appliance holding engine oil or gasoline must be drained of those fluids before being set out (§ 6.04.070(b)).

Under the fee schedule in § 6.04.090(2), a large item costs $25 per approved item and an appliance costs $35 per approved appliance, both billed on the resident's monthly City of Bloomington Utilities statement alongside the base solid-waste charge. These charges apply only to items on the department's approved lists; anything else set at the curb without prior arrangement is not collected. Hazardous materials such as propane, butane or other pressurized gas containers are never collected as part of large item or appliance service under the combustible-waste definition in § 6.04.010.
