Bloomington, IN Trash & Recycling: Yard Waste Collection (2026)

Section 6.04.050(a) requires grass, weeds, leaves and similar yard and garden materials to be placed in a watertight container of thirty-five gallons or less, or a two-ply biodegradable wet-strength paper bag, with each container or bag weighing under forty pounds and kept separate from solid waste and recycling and unmixed with any other substance; the container must be kept in good, sanitary condition without ragged or sharp edges that could injure collection staff. Yard waste is collected weekly on the resident's assigned collection day, the same schedule as trash and recycling. Subsection (b) covers woody material: brush, tree trimmings, hedge clippings and similar items must be cut to no more than four feet long and securely tied into bundles no more than two feet thick before being set out.

Yard waste must stay separated from trash and recycling at the curb under § 6.04.020, or the sanitation division will not collect any of the three. Placement follows the same general rules as trash: containers and bundles go at the curb or property line facing the street, out no more than 24 hours before pickup and removed the same day as collection under § 6.04.110, and kept at least four feet from trees, poles, mailboxes and fire hydrants and ten feet from parked cars under § 6.04.080(c). An additional yard waste container, bag or bundle beyond the regular set-out costs $1.00 under the fee schedule in § 6.04.090(2)(B), billed through City of Bloomington Utilities.
