Bloomington, IN Trash & Recycling: Collection Schedule (2026)

The department of public works, under the supervision of the board of public works, collects solid waste, recycling and yard waste from residential premises within city limits (single-family homes and buildings of up to four units) at least once each week, or more often if the board orders it, and the board publishes the collection schedule (§§ 6.04.020, 6.04.080(a)). The city supplies each residence a cart in a resident-chosen size, thirty-five, sixty-four or ninety-six gallon, and collects only from that cart on the customer's assigned day; an owner or occupant who needs a pickup on a different day must arrange it with the sanitation division under board policy, and anything set out loose beside the cart is left uncollected (§ 6.04.030(a)-(b)).

Collection is not made from buildings with more than four residential units, residences above or attached to a business, or units on private streets, unless the director of public works authorizes it in writing, and never from alleyways (§ 6.04.080(b), (i)). Crews work only between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. (§ 6.04.080(j)). Yard waste, recyclables and other solid waste must stay separated at the curb; mixing them means the sanitation division leaves them uncollected and exposes the resident to the $50 fine schedule in § 6.04.100 (§ 6.04.020). Service is billed monthly through City of Bloomington Utilities, with the thirty-five gallon cart starting at $8.75 a month, rising three percent every January 1 (§ 6.04.090).
