Wake County operates 11 Multi-Material Recycling Facilities (Convenience Centers) where unincorporated residents bring bulk items, white goods (appliances), tires, electronics, and household hazardous waste at no cost. Curbside bulk pickup is offered by individual cities (Raleigh, Cary, Apex, etc.), not by the county.
Under §50.04, certain items cannot go in regular trash: yard waste (state-banned 1993), white goods (appliances under NCGS §130A-309.81), used oil, scrap tires (NCGS §130A-309.58), and lead-acid batteries. Wake County provides free drop-off at 11 Convenience Centers for residents of unincorporated Wake. Mattresses are accepted for a small fee at the South Wake Landfill. Inside Raleigh, the city offers monthly bulk pickup; Cary uses a scheduled service. The South Wake Landfill in Apex accepts construction debris for a tipping fee. Hazardous-waste days are scheduled quarterly.
Putting banned items in regular trash: hauler may refuse pickup. Illegal dumping of any of the banned items: Class 1 misdemeanor under NCGS §14-399 with fines up to $1,000.
