New Britain, CT Trash & Recycling: Bulk Item Disposal (2026)

Section 11-16 covers oversized combustible and incombustible rubbish, defined in section 11-1 as waste too large for the standard curbside container, including wood tables, dressers, mattresses, large plastic furniture and bundled land-clearing debris on the combustible side, and items like bed springs, automobile and machinery parts on the incombustible side. Subsection (a) makes collection available only to residential one- through four-family buildings and five- and six-family multi-dwelling buildings, and only by a call-in, scheduled appointment approved through department of public works service procedures the common council signs off on; there is no unscheduled weekly bulk pickup.

Subsection (b) applies the same noon rule as regular rubbish: nothing oversized may go to the curb earlier than noon on the day before the scheduled pickup. Subsection (c) sets the penalty path for jumping the line or missing the appointment system: the department of public works first notifies the violator to remove the rubbish within five days, and if it is not removed, the department removes it itself and bills the property owner a minimum of two hundred dollars. Subsection (d) backs that bill with a lien recorded against the property in the New Britain land records within thirty days under General Statutes section 49-73b, carrying eighteen percent interest until paid, and subsection (e) separately fines anyone who violates the noon rule in subsection (b) up to ninety-nine dollars under General Statutes section 53a-27.
